Be-Side

The Home of Hakm's B-Side e-alter ego...his auxiliary brain or external hard drive...

Two Hak-ku and one Nah-ku from yesterday’s drive to Silver City.

Two Hak-ku (Hakim + Haiku…really Senryu…= Hak-ku) and one Nah-ku (short haiku-like poem that is a few syllables too long) from my drive to the Poet Laureate Panel & Performance at the Southwest Festival of the Written Word in Silver City.

Big thanks to Silver City Poet Laureate Bonnie Buckley Maldonado for inviting me and sharing a brilliant reading!

Look at You

If your conscience is

so clear, then why do you

continue, to drown it

Reminder (for Career Artist Parents everywhere)

I solemnly swear

to not turn my son’s childhood

into a business

Life is Like a Bad Poem

Life is like a bad poem, where the obvious is painfully obvious…and the subtle is too.

Last weekend, I got back to my slam poetry roots as the team finals host for the Southwest Shootout Poetry Slam Championship. I may have been rusty as host (haven’t slammed competitively since 2010), but the poets were certainly rust-free. I had the fortunate opportunity of sharing a podcast the next day with a poet I long admired, Melissa May-Dunn, and a poetic discovery who now has a new fan, Desireé Dallagiacomo. Thanks to Alissa Hall for participating (as a judge) and putting poetry on the front page. Read the blog and have a listen to the podcast here.

You can also check out myself and ABQSlams co-slammaster Damien Flores talking up the event on network television, New Mexico Style on KRQE/KASA FOX 2, here.

Look what landed on ye olde desktop today! SWEAR gets a book review in Local iQ. But this endorsement from a young, Black & gifted 7 year-old is like a badge of BADASSERY “My hero is Hakim. He is my tallest best friend. This is some of his line from Roots Revival: ‘Brother you will not sleep brother. The revolution will not be televised.” Love you to Levi, all apologies to Gil Scott-Heron. #GOODGoodFriday

Went to sleep in Albuquerque and woke up in Africa … as a featured poet on Badilisha Poetry! Here’s what my Executive Assistant Ronica Brooks had to say:

"Take a look at one of the latest main page poetryfeatures on Hakim Bellamy. He makes an appearance on the Badilisha Poetry Radio Show and recites his poem entitled “Place Matters”. See him as he paints a portrait of life deeply affected by what place we are in, out of, or sometimes kept from.
Go to http://badilishapoetry.com/ to see the page feature!! Enjoy!”

Thank you to Linda Kaoma and the rest of the Badilisha family! Thanks to Diles and Atom Ortiz for helping me with the audio track!
